ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT O8G GAMING Review

Overclocking

On the previous page, we learned that our video card is averaging around 1956MHz while gaming.  Now we can overclock it and see how much higher we can get!  We are using ASUS GPU Tweak and our room is around 70F.

Highest Stable Overclock

In ASUS GPU Tweak there is an option to unlocked enhanced and expanded frequency options.  We did enable this because if you don’t you can only max out the GPU Clock slider to +50.  However, with the enhanced frequency option enabled we can now select a maximum of +101.  Therefore, it does benefit you to enable this option so you can get the maximum overclock possible.

We also found out that with this video card the maximum Power Target we can set is +50 and there is also a limit on the memory frequency.  In addition, while we can manipulate the GPU Voltage, we cannot set it over the maximum of 1.200V which the GPU already runs at.  Therefore, there are limitations with the GPU and what we can set.  This so far seems to be par for the course with Radeon RX 5700 XT GPU.  These limits are imposed by AMD and we’ve found them to be common so far on these GPUs.  However, we do have a little more room to navigate with this ASUS video card and GPU Tweak.  We managed to hit the highest overclock we’ve ever achieved on a Radeon RX 5700 XT.

We managed to push the GPU Clock up to +101 as you can see which is technically 2150MHz maximum total boost clock, but you’ll never experience anywhere near that in gaming of course.  We managed to push the memory u to +150 or 1900MHz which translates to 15.2GHz versus the default 14GHz.  That improves memory bandwidth up to 486GB/sec versus 448GB/sec.  We also did set the fan at 100% to ensure the highest possible overclock, and this fan is not loud at all at 100%.

GPU Frequency

Here is the graph that shows the overclock (in blue) versus this video card’s default clock speed (in orange) that we experienced.  Remember, 1770MHz is the base clock and 1905MHz is the default game clock.  The green line represents 1905MHz which is the default game clock.

Here you can see that with our overclock the frequency goes up quite high and hovers around 2070MHz while gaming!  That’s the highest sustained overclock we’ve ever achieved.  The average of this clock speed is 2070MHz.  Therefore, we have overclocked from an average of 1956MHz default to 2070MHz overclocked, that’s a 6% overclock from the default clock speed. 

That may not sound like a lot, but consider that a reference AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT averages about 1854MHz.  Therefore, the ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT O8G GAMING at default 1956MHz is already 6% faster on clock speed versus a reference AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT to start with.  If you add the overclock then the ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT O8G GAMING has a 12% overclock compared to a reference AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, which is very significant.

Also, the ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT O8G GAMING has reached an overclock that exceeds the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra.  On that video card, we hit an average overclock of 2043MHz.  The ASUS ROG STRIX RX 5700 XT O8G GAMING is at 2070MHz.  We also got a higher memory overclock.  The XFX video card hit 14.88GHz and this ASUS one-hit 15.2GHz, so we get more memory bandwidth.  Therefore, this is the highest overclocked Radeon RX 5700 XT we have evaluated.

GPUz

You can see that the GPU is running at 1.200V and with the fan at 100% the GPU temperature is only 61c with a hot spot temp of 82c.  These are great temperatures.  The GPU only power draw is 261W. 

The final overclock is, therefore:

GPU – 2070MHz
Memory – 15.2GHz
