The Competition

The XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra is in a very good competitive position with the competition as it turns out.  The MSRP on a reference Radeon RX 5700 XT is $399.  The XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra can be found on Amazon at $420 currently and in a worst-case scenario $439.99.

When you look toward the competition pricing, you find two video cards that are hovering in this price range right now.  You will find the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER video cards and the original GeForce RTX 2070 (non-SUPER) video card.  Though the “SUPER” has supplanted it, the “SUPER” is also much more super expensive.

If you look at Newegg and sort GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER video cards by price, new items, lowest to highest you will see it.  Prices start at $399 and there are plenty of video cards here around $420, same as the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra.  They even go up to the mid-$450 price range, and some even higher.

The same is true for GeForce RTX 2070 video cards.  Here you can see pricing around $400-440 with cards available at $400.  So this shows that the RTX 2060 SUPER and RTX 2070 are price competitive with the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra at $420-$440.

If you look beyond the RTX 2070 up to the RTX 2070 SUPER you will find that cards start at a whopping $500 and go way up from there.  Therefore, based on price, the RTX 2070 SUPER is $100+ more than the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra, and not price comparable with it.  However, we have a hunch the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra will be performance comparable with it.

So basically, we know the RTX 2060 SUPER and RTX 2070 are the “price comparable” video cards.  Since the GeForce RTX 2070 is faster than the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, we might as well just use the GeForce RTX 2070 in our review and forgo testing the RTX 2060 SUPER.  If the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra beats the RTX 2070 we know it will wipe the floor with the RTX 2070 SUPER.

We also know that the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER is way out of the price range, it is much more expensive.  However, we have a theory that the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC III Ultra is going to be “performance compatible” anyway.  So, we are including a GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition video card in this review, even though it MSRP’s for $499.

This should be a very interesting comparison.
