Conclusion

The ASUS ROG STRIX 750W is the second power supply we have seen here at TheFPSReview from ASUS. However, ASUS has been one of the biggest names in the enthusiast community for some time now even though power supplies have not been their core business, or what many users are used to thinking of when they see the ASUS name. However, the ROG THOR 850W we previously reviewed showed that ASUS could produce a serious contender with some neat features to boot. So, the chances for success seem to be rather high again today. The question is; do chances translate into reality? Let’s see.

Build Quality

Today’s ASUS ROG STRIX 750W starts things off with a build quality that is exceptional for its market position. The exterior represents a well balanced and distinctive approach that results in a striking and well-branded product. This is in addition to the fact that we get good cables and a nice finish. The integration is very clean, as we often see from Seasonic, with a good bit of flash including the red PCB. The component selection features Nippon Chemi-con, Nichicon, and Rubycon standard electrolytics paired with FPCAP solid capacitors. There is also a dual ball bearing fan incorporating ASUS axial-tech paired with ASUS’ Rog Thermal Solution heatsinks. Lastly, the documentation with this unit is a disaster but the 10-year warranty is an excellent length.

Load Testing

Today’s ASUS ROG STRIX 750W started off testing in excellent shape. We saw voltage regulation of up to 0.05v on the 12v rail, 0.03v on the 5v rail, and 0.03v on the 3.3v rail.These numbers would be excellent for any unit. However, this unit is a more mainstream offering than the ROG THOR 850W was, so these values definitely get a bit of a bump. On top of that, this unit was better than the Phanteks AMP 750 and tied with the EVGA SuperNOVA G5 750W making this unit tied for the best 750W unit we have seen to date! We also saw efficiency values that ranged from 87.56% to 91.49% efficient at 120v AC input and 85.87% to 90.26% at 100v AC input. When it came to the 80 Plus efficiency numbers, we did see the ROG STRIX 750W fall a bit short of its stated efficiency at 20% load. On the flip side, the ROG STRIX 750W did pass our Torture Test.

When we look at the Transient Load Tests results for the ASUS ROG STRIX 750W, we see that the results are excellent. When directly loaded, the 12v rail showed a peak change of ~160mV, and the 5v rail had a peak change of ~30mV. During the 12v load, the unloaded 5v rail saw a peak change of ~25mV. In absolute terms these results are excellent. However, in relative terms these numbers are even better! Indeed, this unit bested both the Phanteks AMP 750 and the EVGA SuperNOVA G5 750W.

DC Output Quality

The DC Output Quality results for the ASUS ROG STRIX 750W were excellent. To start off, we saw peak ripple/noise values of just ~25mV of ripple/noise on the 12v rail, ~20mV on the 5v rail, and ~15mV on the 3.3v rail during our regular load tests. These values are well within specification limits and that means, at a minimum, excellent in absolute terms. In relative terms, these results are excellent as well since this unit bested the Phanteks AMP 750 and matched the EVGA SuperNOVA G5 750W.

Noise

Today’s ASUS ROG STRIX 750W is not a tiny capacity unit, but it is based on a platform that we have seen good results from when it comes to noise output before. On top of that, this unit also features a unique fan, “enhanced” ASUS ROG thermal solutions (heatsinks), and it is coupled with a hybrid fan controller option. While we tested the unit with hybrid mode off, it was not until the 100% load test that it was maybe apparent that the unit was adding noise to our load testing environment. That is very much a question by the way as it was hard to pick up the noise from this unit. At all other load levels, the fan was just unremarkable in every way. So, this unit seems to be one of the best behaved units we have seen in our testing in this aspect and should be a very good option for folks looking for a quiet product offering.

Final Points

The ASUS ROG STRIX 750W is an excellent unit all around. From it’s excellent Build Quality to its excellent voltage regulation to its excellent Transient Load to its excellent DC Output Quality the ROG STRIX 750W seems to have it all! On top of that, it was probably the quietest fan cooled unit we have seen to date! The only quibble we have is in the efficiency realm where this unit did fine in our tests but was just outside the claimed 80 Plus parameters. That is a minor quibble. So, what is excellence like this going to cost us?

Today, we find that the ASUS ROG STRIX 750W is currently harder to come by, like all units, and the best price we can find today is $167.27 at Walmart (of all places). Now, that is a bit of a tough price to swallow since it is coming in above the MSRP. However, it seems every power supply is coming well above MSRP these days. Well, that is, if you can find them in stock. So, we can not fault ASUS for that. Thus, this unit is going to be a outstanding value at its normal MSRP and still an excellent one today.

Users looking for what might be the best 750W unit on the market with a long warranty need not look any farther than the ASUS ROG STRIX 750W. This goes double if you are looking at stepping up to one of NVIDIA’s new RTX3080/RTX3090 cards and their 750W minimum PSU requirement, you simply can’t beat the ROG STRIX 750W as a partner to your new GPU upgrade.
