Gameplay Performance at 1440p

The MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X 12G is being tested at 1440p (2560 x 1440) resolution using our new gaming suite. We have added newer games that are quite graphically challenging and offer even more Ray Tracing options plus kept a couple of oldies that are still gold standards for performance. DLSS is used for the MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X unless the game does not support it. FSR Will be used for the Radeon RX 7900 XT. All the graphics settings in this suite were set as high as the game allows. The comparison for our video card review today is the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT. This was chosen as there is no Founders Edition of the RTX 4070 Ti and the base price for the RX 7900 XT at release was $899, which is very close to our MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X in price.

Returnal

Returnal was launched on the PC in February of 2023 and is based on Unreal Engine 4. The game supports real-time ray tracing effects, particle systems, and volumetric rendering. We utilize the graphics preset to set EPIC graphics settings with an unlocked framerate, and everything is enabled. For ray tracing tests we have enabled Ray Traced Shadows and Reflections at EPIC settings. We use the built-in benchmark.

MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X: Returnal, 1440 performance

To start off our look at performance, the RX 7900 XT is the fastest here by 14%. With upscaling, the result jumps to 23%! Overclocking does help out by 3%, but there is no catching the RX 7900 XT here. Still, both cards give fast results without upscaling. Returnal is very playable on the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X at 1440p with EPIC settings at over 100FPS, for smooth and enjoyable gameplay.

Forspoken

Forspoken was released on January 24th, 2023, on the PC and uses the Luminous Engine. The game supports all upscaling methods and Ray Tracing. We are going to customize the settings and enable the highest graphics settings, including Ultra High Texture Memory. We use the built-in benchmark.

MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X: Forspoken 1440 performance

Again the RX 7900 XT is the faster card. The margin over the MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X has narrowed to 6% however. Overclocking gains about 5% but still cannot overtake the RX 7900 XT. And also once again, the framerates are extremely high on the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X anyway, at over 100FPS the game is butter smooth and playable at the highest game settings.

Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol was released in December of 2022 on the PC and is based on Unreal Engine 4. We run the game in DX12 mode with unlimited framerate, and all graphics settings enabled and at the highest graphics settings. This game supports ray-traced shadows, reflections, and transmissions. We use the built-in benchmark.

We’re going to call it even here. Both the video cards show fast results and are essentially even. Overclocked, the MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X is 6% faster.

Chernobylite Enhanced Edition

Chernobylite, based on Unreal Engine 4, was released on the PC in 2021, but the Enhanced Edition update for the game was released in April 2022. The Enhanced Edition provides a visual overhaul of the game with better textures, plus introduces tessellation and ray tracing features. It features raytraced reflections, raytraced translucency, raytraced caustics, and raytraced dynamic diffuse global illumination. It supports upscaling, and we use the highest quality. We use the built-in benchmark.

In plain rasterization, this game is blazing fast. The MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X comes out on top by 11% and 14% in this game. Overclocking is able to add a 4% improvement.

Dying Light 2

Dying Light 2 was released in February 2022 on the PC.  It uses Techland’s C-Engine and supports Ray Tracing for various environmental effects including Ray Traced Soft Shadows, Ray Traced Ambient Occlusion, Ray Traced Global Illumination, and Ray Traced Reflections.  It also supports both DLSS and FSR 2.0 upscaling technologies.  We are using the game’s built-in benchmark. We use the game patched to 1.11.3Pc

Very fast results here in a demanding game. The RX 7900 XT again is on top, this time by 5%. The upscaling gives a marginal 2% win, but with FPS this fast, upscaling isn’t necessary. Once again our overclocked card gives a 5% boost.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 was released in December 2020 and uses the REDengine 4. We have the game patched to version 1.62 for our testing. We test using the built-in benchmark. Preset options for Ultra quality are used. Ray Tracing testing uses the “Ultra” presets. This game also supports DLSS and AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution FSR 2.1.  We test FSR 2.1 Ultra Quality on AMD GPUs.

Yikes! These results are fast and faster. The RX 7900 XT once again is outrunning the MSI RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X, this time by 16%. Nice fast results right there without upscaling, in a really graphically heavy game. It looks like overclocking gains 4% but is no help in DLSS results.

SUMMARY

We reviewed the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPRIM X 12G video card at 1440p and 4K compared to the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT. The video card is top shelf in build quality and cooling. It overclocks well with minimal effort. At 1440p this video card is very fast and can utilize all the Ray Tracing features in games. It struggles a bit at 4K especially with Ray Tracing. The sticking point is price, but prices have been falling lately, so make sure to check for the best deals on this top-tier build from MSI.
