Custom RTX 2070 SUPER at Your Service
Introduction
We’ve got our first review of a full retail custom video card based on the new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU today. We have been looking forward to testing a custom retail video card so that we can see how much more overclocking ability we can push the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER GPU too. First a little refresher, NVIDIA announced the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER on July 2nd with availability on July 9th. The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER debuted at $499 and fully replaces the GeForce RTX 2070 and GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition video cards.
In our launch review of the Founders Edition, we looked at how the new pricing lines up. At $499 the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition is $100 less than the $599 GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition and is faster. Also, at $499 it is replacing the standard GeForce RTX 2070 which was also $499, but the new SUPER version is much faster. At $499 this pricing now puts it underneath the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER Founders Edition at $699 and above the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER Founders Edition at $399.
ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING
The fully custom retail video card we have for review today is the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING. Check out our unboxing of this video card on our YouTube Channel. This is the highest SKU currently from ASUS based on the RTX 2070 SUPER. Being the highest SKU, this video card also has the highest premium. The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING has an MSRP of $589.99. That means it costs $90 more than the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition.
Keep in mind also ASUS offers many other variants that cost a lot less than this. This video card is the most expensive one, with the most features and the highest boost clock with the most overclocking potential. However, ASUS does offer many other RTX 2070 SUPER SKUs with varying degrees of cost. If you want a cheaper variety, ASUS does offer less expensive RTX 2070 SUPER based video cards. GPU Frequency
Let’s talk about the boost clock first since this is a major difference from the GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition which will change performance. The reference GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER Founders Edition clock speeds have a base clock of 1605MHz and a boost clock of 1770MHz. With the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING it also has the same base clock of 1605MHz; however, it is the base clock that really improves performance out-of-the-box.
The default “GAMING MODE” boost clock when you install the video card is 1905MHz! That’s a big difference from 1770MHz on the Founders Edition. In addition, there is a software-enabled mode called “OC MODE” that you can turn on for an instant boost to 1935MHz boost clock! That alone is going to give this video card a huge boost in highest sustained GPU frequency and performance.
Specs
Memory configuration on the ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING is the same as the Founders Edition. It has 8GB of GDDR6 on a 256-bit memory bus at 14GHz. The ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 2070 SUPER O8G GAMING requires 2x 8-pin power connectors. It has 2x HDMI 2.0b and 2x DisplayPort 1.4 and USB Type-C. It measures 11.8” in length and takes up the space of 2.7 slots. The recommended PSU is 650W.
