Gears 5

We are using the new game Gears 5 in our review.  We are using the built-in benchmark in the game for the performance below.  However, we have also verified performance in real gameplay and verified the highest playable settings.  Feel free to test using the built-in benchmark and compare your results to ours.

We are going to show you default “Ultra” preset performance, and then we are going to turn up the Shadows and Reflections to the “Insane” setting and also show performance.  The game runs in DX12 on all cards, and to match the viewport at the right resolution we set the desktop to 1440p so the game runs everything at the right resolution we are testing since there is no exclusive fullscreen option.  We also have the Ultra HD Texture Pack installed.

Note for all Games

In our graphs on the following game, pages take note that they are arranged from the fastest result to the slowest.  The XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra and XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra OC’d (Overclocked) are highlighted in orange in each graph so you can see them easier.  The “OC’d” bar is with the XFX video card overclocked as shown on the overclocking page at 2043MHz/14.88GHz.

In the above graph, we are comparing at 1440p with the default “Ultra” quality preset in the game.  The Radeon RX 5700 XT does extremely well in this game compared to the competition.  Even the reference AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is 10% faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition.  It’s 15% faster than the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER FE.

The XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra improves upon the reference AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT by 3% higher performance.  When we overclock the XFX video card it gains another 3%.  Total, that’s 6% faster than the reference AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and 17% faster than the GeForce RTX 2070 Founders Edition.

In terms of what’s playable, there is no question that the XFX Radeon RX 5700 XT THICC II Ultra is playable at “Ultra” settings at 1440p in this game.  For some reason, the Radeon RX 5700 XT is doing so much better than the GeForce RTX 2070 FE here.  We did note that Radeon RX 5700 XT video cards had the option of ASYNC Compute in the settings, and it was enabled at “Ultra” quality.    These video cards really are better for this game.

Now in this graph, we have enabled “Insane” Shadows and Reflections.  It brings down performance a bit, but overall the same pattern emerges.  The Radeon RX 5700 XT video cards are very playable in this game with the absolute maximum settings enabled at 1440p.  You can enjoy this game with all the features turned on and up to the highest values with them.
