Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
We are using the newly released game, Call of Duty Modern Warfare. We are utilizing the maximum game settings that we have manually selected for the resolution tests. We then customized the settings to find the highest playable settings. This game runs in DX12 API. For our evaluation, we are using a manual run-through in the first section of the campaign. We move from the helicopter drop, call an airstrike on the town below and work our way all the way through the town taking out the baddies.
A Note On Testing
As you read through this review we remind you that we are performing a single video card format review. To learn about this review format and what it means please read the Test Setup (Page 4) of this review for the full description.
Also, we are including full overclocking performance as indicated by the orange bars in the graphs. The overclock is 2061MHz/15GHz (GPU/Memory). The blue bars represent the video card’s default out-of-box performance.
Please read our note at the top of Page 3 as well, though we have AORUS depicted in the graphs this is a GIGABYTE branded card only, not AORUS branded. It does not change the results or our conclusion.
Apples-to-Apples
This graph shows performance on the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER OC 6G video card at three resolutions in this game at the maximum graphics settings. In this way, you can see how performance scales with resolution.
This game actually performs very good on this video card; it seems to be well optimized. We were impressed with the 1080p performance in the upper 80’s and then mid 90’s when overclocked. Even at 1440p performance is near playable at 64FPS average and then 66FPS when overclocked. The only resolution that is too demanding is 4K naturally. Keep in mind that this game is at its highest graphics settings, including Filmic SMAA T2X AA.
Overclocking at 1080p seems to have improved performance by 8% but at 1440p it’s only a 4% improvement. The advantage seems to decrease with the higher the resolution is.
Highest Playable Settings
Now in this section, we show you what we found to be playable, or what we had to do to make the game playable and our recommendation.
We already know that 1080p with the highest in-game settings is playable, you don’t have to change a thing at 1080p. However, this game can also be played at 1440p on the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER OC 6G by lowering a few of the game settings.
We found that lowering the Shadow setting down one notch, and the Screen Space Ambient Occlusion setting and the Screen Space Reflections down one notch we get a nice boost in performance. We now average 71FPS and the game is super smooth in all combat situations with this video card.
Therefore, you can play this game at either 1080p with maximum graphics, or at 1440p with a few settings lowered.
